PCA analysis as a method for measuring the dynamics of globalization processes: idea and practice

The development of the theory and practice of international economic relations (IER) in a specific historical period is closely interconnected with the current technological order, and fully inherits its features.

In the past decades, it has been accepted that the global system of world economic relations operates on the basis of the digital technological order as a mature manifestation of the post-industrial [1].

The philosophy of the digital technological order is largely based on the idea of ​​​​digitizing information in any of its manifestations [2].

In particular, the issue of constructing a globalization index as a measure for assessing the general characteristics of economic, social, technological, informational, political and other types of globalization is being actively developed [3].

Approaches to constructing a globalization index have undergone several stages of development from the simplest single-factor measurements to multi-factor models for approximating complex sets of metrics. The established tradition of constructing a globalization index is largely based on the use of the principal component analysis (PCA analysis) [4]. Based on the results of the study, we have identified a number of contradictions between the actually implemented algorithms for calculating the globalization index and the general logic of PCA analysis as the declared methodological basis for the calculation. As part of the report, we submit for discussion some proposals for synchronizing some of the accumulated contradictions between the idea and implementation of the model.
