V.A. Rokhlin and D.A. Gudkov against the background of the 16th Hilbert problem

The story of the friendship and cooperation of
the Leningrad mathematician Vladimir Abramovich Rokhlin with the Nizhny Novgorod mathematician Dmitry Andreevich Gudkov during the last period of Rokhlin's mathematical biography, when he was engaged in the topology of real algebraic varieties, in which he received remarkable results. The article is based on correspondence 1971-1982, preserved in the Gudkov archive and containing 15 letters from V.A. Rokhlin and 8 letters from D.A. Gudkov.
