A Method to Recognize Uncorrectly Folded Models of α-Helical Transmembrane Protein Domains

Integral membrane proteins (MP) are objects of exceptional importance, but experimental methods often fail to establish their spatial structures. To solve the problem, one can use computational modeling techniques, however the low quality of the MP models constructed in silico is a major shortcoming of these methods. Here we present a novel method for assessment of packing quality for transmembrane domains of α-helical MPs. It is demonstrated that the method allows identification of native-like conformations among a large set of theoretical ‘decoy’ structures.
