Statistical analysis as a method of study of some aspects of higher education

Higher education in Russia in whole and on the example of Gubkin Russian State Oil & Gas University in particular is explored through the analysis of official statistics and statistical processing data on undergraduates of the university. Analysis of official statistics data from 2000 to 2015 reveals the traditional gender asymmetry in higher education both vertical (by level of education) and horizontal (by specialty). For the same time the share of women on upper levels of higher education has been constantly increasing: in postgraduate from 43% to 47% for all specialties and from 21% to 26% for engineering education; in doctorate: from 35% to 48% and from 17% to 28% accordingly. Changing gender stereotypes and socio-economic conditions provide a steady increase in the share of women on the upper levels of higher education in Russia. A more detailed study of gender asymmetry in higher education was carried out by an example of training engineers of oil and gas industry. Data Base containing information: Gender; Faculty; Type of Admission (Budget, Target, Contract); Region of High School (Federal Districts of Russia) and Academic Achievements – for undergraduates of engineering faculties had been created. The data were processed so that relative and cumulative frequencies of all variables for female and male undergraduates were obtained and graphic presentations (bivariate charts and histograms) were created. Analysis of the results reveals a traditional gender inequality with some unexpected deviations which permit to make interesting conclusions about processes in higher education from a gender perspective.
